Hi Kaz,

I’m a 24-year-old male with a high sex drive and I’m interested in getting into porn. I’m no Dwayne Johnson but I’m in reasonably good shape. The only thing is, my member is 7 inches, will this hold me back? I’m worried I’m too small? What do I need to do to get involved in the adult industry?

Dear Craig,

Getting into adult movies is not an easy path for males and will involve a lot of determination and hard work. It’s also not as well paid as you might think. However, so long as you are prepared to put in the time, network hard and do your groundwork, then it is possible to gain some paid work as a male porn stud.

Health and Safety

Firstly, you need a clean bill of health. Visit a good GUM clinic that offers testing and a certificate. They should give you a full screening and a cert. I can highly recommend Dean Street in Soho that runs a fast and efficient service.  You can also head over to http://ukadultproducers.org/ Here, you can find a further list of clinics, tips and advice as well as casting calls for male performers. These guys are experts in their field and have helped transform the industry into a community that look out for one another. Do check them out before you do anything else and don’t get caught up in any internet scams where companies promise you work if you pay them money upfront.

Show Reel

After you have got your certificate (it needs to be under 4 weeks old). Find yourself a Porn Model to shoot your own show reel. You should expect to pay for this and it may cost you £300-£350 for one scene. It may sound like a lot but if you were a professional mainstream actor you would need to pay up to £600 for a show reel. If you were a lawyer you would expect to pay law school fees. This show reel will be your shop window and a representation of what you can do. Without it, no one will take an interest in you or ‘give you a chance’. Time is money and it’s a tough and competitive industry. You make your own chances in life, so if you want to succeed you will need to pay for a show reel. It’s a bit like winning the lotto, you must be in it to win it! You can also book a cameraman to shoot this for you, but if you are on a budget you can shoot it Gonzo/POV style (point of view) which means you will hold the camera.

Once you have your show reel (and have probably had a lot of fun in the making) you can now start submitting it to producers. Head back to UKAP and show off your skills.

Also check out http://www.adultindustryresources.com/drupal7/ an excellent resource for adult Jobs, contacts and advice.

You mention that you are concerned about your size. 7 inches is slightly above the average UK male size and this will not be an issue for UK adult movies. Producers are more concerned with you being able to maintain an erection on camera and being able to make the money shot on demand!

More importantly, you will need to be prepared to work with any one. If you think being a success involves sleeping with girls that look like Hollywood celebrities every day then you are barking up the wrong tree. If you want a lot of work, expect to work with women of all ages and sizes. If you say you want to only work with size 8 blondes, or skinny busty brunettes, then your career is going to be extremely limited and you’ll struggle to be taken seriously industry.

Promotion Is Key

Promote, promote, and promote some more! Hard work, publicising yourself and getting out to networking events is a necessity. Meet lots of people, have a website built with a gallery and set up some social networks such as twitter and Facebook to start building your following.

The adult industry is always look for fresh talent and nothing lasts forever, so always have a backup plan and something you can fall back on work wise.  Always conduct yourself in a professional, be on time and respect the models you work with. Word gets around fast and you don’t want to be known as the guy who is hard work.

Expect to be paid less than your female counter part. It’s one of the few industries where women are better paid. No one really cares about the guy in a porn scene. He is merely a prop to showcase the female.

If you are lucky enough to be one of the few that starts regularly then you will need to find yourself a good accountant if you are earning more than the set government personal allowance which is £11, 500.

I wish you the best of luck Craig!
