Kenny The Captain is back down below his last winning mark and looks worth siding with at 16/1 in the 4.55 at Nottingham today.

Tim Easterby’s gelding has not been at his best in four starts this season, but ended 2013 on an upward curve when winning three times and having started this campaign on a mark of 86 is now runing off just 78.

That is 3lb lower than when Kenny The Captain registered his last success in the mud at Doncaster last November where he raced in touch before running on gamely to beat Torchlighter by a neck.

It gives him every chance from a handicapping perspective, and he should strip much fitter for a recent run at Ripon where he showed plenty of pace before weakning badly on his first run for 91 days.

What is interesting is that he came good at this time of the year 12 months ago, and all of his wins have come on soft ground.

The son of Captain Rio is clearly at his best when the mud is flying, and today’s conditions are ideal.

This race should also be run to suit as there is plenty of pace in the line-up for Kenny The Captain to chase, and with Duran Fentiman in the saddle it would be no suprise to see him bounce back and run a huge race having been given a massive chance by the handicapper.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Kenny The Captain (16/1 BetVictor, Sky Bet, William Hill – BOG)
