Emilio Largo looks the ideal type for today’s Bunbury Cup at Newmarket (3.15) and at 16/1 rates decent value to land the spoils.

The gelding has won 5 of his 13 career starts, landing a hat-trick in 2011 when trained by Sir Henry Cecil and adding to that tally last season with victories at Ripon and Newbury for his former handler.

He travelled strongly and showed a smart turn of foot in the latter after encountering trouble in-running to beat Nasri with more in hand than the head margin suggests off a mark of 91, and although now 4lb higher in the weights he should be more than capable of scoring from his current mark judged on that effort.

He also ran a cracker last season to finish fifth of 22 to Captain Bertie in the Spring Mile at Newbury, and shaped really well on his seasonal reappearance when an eye-catching fourth of 15 to Yeeow over an inadequate 6f Ascot.

That was his first start for James Fanshawe and after travelling strongly at the rear of the field he stayed on well late on to be beaten just a length without ever quite threatening to get to the leaders.

Although he then failed to back up that effort last time out in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot he is far better than he showed there and more than capable of bouncing back under what look to be his optimum conditions.

The five-year-old has won three of his five starts over today’s 7f trip, goes well on a straight track and seems suited by a strongly run race where he can travel into the contest and be delivered late on the scene.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Emilio Largo (16/1  generally available – use BOG firms)
