Dragon Mall ran a remarkable race last time out and looks worth an each-way wager at 33/1 in the John Smith’s Cup at York today (3.05).
David Simcock’s charge has posted some solid efforts since winning his maiden at Newmarket, most notably when fourth to Thikriyaat in a Group 3 at Goodwood 12 months ago.
He comes into the race on the back of two eye-catching efforts, finishing a tenderly-handled third at Nottingham following a break and ninth of 16 to Snoano in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot.
Dragon Mall lost stacks of ground in the latter when walking out of the stalls as the gates opened and was still detached and seemingly going nowhere with 3f to go.
However, he then picked up in tremendous fashion to finish the race off with a real rattle and was beaten just 3 1/4 lengths.
It was an incredible run given how the race panned out and he would have gone close to winning in my book had he got away on terms.
He is clearly not straightforward but now gets fitted with blinks and eye-shields for the first time and if they enable him to get away with the rest he looks weighted to run a big race on the pick of his form off an unchanged mark of 101.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Dragon Mall (33/1 Coral – BOG)
