Captain Scooby has been shaping as if ready to score and having dropped to a career low mark looks solid value at 7/1 in the 2.35 at Beverley.
Richard Whittaker’s gelding signalled that his time was near when a solid third to Caranbola over course and distance back in July off a mark of 67, and although he has a filed to build on that effort in three subsequent outings he has not been running as badly as his form figures suggest.
He was unlucky in running on his penultimate start at Carlisle when fourth to Invincible Force, and got going too late after being outpaced at a critical stage behind Toby Tyler at Redcar last time out.
The five-year-old wore a visor on both those occasions, but it clearly didn’t have the desired effect and is dispensed with today.
Although his losing run now stretches back to last September, his last win came off a mark of 68 and the handicapper has been slow to relent after he performed well off marks in the mid 70s.
However he is now down to a career low of just 64 and with Amy Ryan taking off another 3lb he is potentially thrown-in at his best.
I think this represents a golden opportunity for him to get back into the winners’ enclosure, and he looks sure to take all the beating.
At 7/1 he looks an each-way steal.
Recommended bet: 3pts each-way Captain Scooby (7/1 generally available – BOG firms)
