Albaqaa looks to hold outstanding claims in today Betfred Mile at Goodwood (3.10) and is of major interest at 12/1.
P J O’Gorman’s gelding won a pair of big-field handicaps last summer, including at this track, and shaped as if coming back to his best last time out when an eye-catching fifth of 14 to Trade Commissioner at Sandown.
After dwelling at the start and being held-up he began to make good headway when denied a clear run two from home and finished well when seeing daylight to be beaten just 2 1/2 lengths.
He is now 3lb better off with the runner-up Vainglory, and 8lb better off with today’s favourite Fulbright who finished 1 1/2 lengths behind him in sixth.
Given how the race panned out I think he should turn the form around with Vainglory, and on the book he has nothing to fear from Fulbright.
I can’t really fathom out why Mark Johnston’s runner is 5pts shorter in the betting, as Albaqaa is fully entitled to be shorter on their running at Sandown.
The selection also showed that his current mark of 93 was workable when a fine fourth to Bubble Chic in a Group 3 contest at Newmarket last October where he had the likes of Retrieve, Premio Loco and Sri Putra behind and with the trip and conditions fine plus a good draw in stall 5 everything looks in place for a huge run.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 4pts each-way Albaqaa (12/1 Betfred – BOG)
