Arab Poet shaped better than the bare result suggest on handicap debut and makes plenty of appeal at 11/1 in the 3.25 at Goodwood today.

Sir Michael Stoute’s colt had four starts last dseason, and ran really well on the third of those when chasing home Massaat in a decent 14-runner maiden at Leicester.

Although no match for the easy 3 3/4 length winner, Arab Poet ran on strongly after being slowly away and it was a highly promising effort given how the race panned out.

Massaatt is also a very useful sort who went on to finish an excellent second to Air Force Blue in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and Newmarket and is now rated 116.

Arab Poet went on to round off the campaign with an easy 2 3/4 length success at Lingfield, and was allotted an opening handicap mark of just 83.

That looks very lenient judged on his run behind Massaat, and altough only runner-up off it at Beverley the winner Garcia is a very useful sort.

Arab Poet was also dropped out in the early stages in the small field and didn’t get the clearest of passages befire being produced to have every chance at the furlong marker.

He then wasn’t given a hard time by jockey Ryan Moore before going down by 1 3/4 lengths.

A 2lb rise for that looks more than fair, and with the prospect of plenty more to come Arab Poet looks weighted to run a huge race.
