Arthenus has caught the eye in both his runs this season and looks worth siding with at 13/2 on handicap debut in the 7.45 at Kempton this evening.

James Fanshawe’s colt shaped really well in the first of those when staying on well under tender handling to finish a 1 1/4 length third of 10 to Mustaaqeem in a 1m maiden at Doncaster.

The three-year-old backed that up with a similar effort at Newmarket when third of eight to Ashridge Lad.

Arthenus was given a strange ride, being held-up well off the pace until making headway a furlong from home and keeping on to be beaten 4 3/4 lengths without being knocked about in any way, shape of form.

It was an effort which immediately marked him out in my eyes as one being brought along specifically with handicaps in mind, and an opening mark of 85 does not look too harsh.

I am convinced that Arthenus is far better than  he has shown so far, and it would be no surprise to see him take a big step forwrad now going down the handicap route.

He also remains unexposed and open to plenty of improvemnet after just three starts and at the odds on offer rates the best bet on the card.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Arthenus (13/2 Stan James – BOG)
