Austria hold France to a draw in Euros

Posted on by Joshua Bunting

Austria shocked the women’s world of football as they held heavy favourites France on Saturday evening drawing 1-1. France created the first opening of the match as Eugenie Le Sommer hit a low effort from effort but it was well dealt with by Austrian keeper Manuela Zinsberger.

Wendie Renard thought she had put the French ahead on 13 minutes but her left foot volley was kept out again by the fine reactions of Zinsberger. Austria created their first opening on 16 minutes when Eve Perisset misjudged a long ball from the back before it fell to Nicole Billa but she could only direct her effort over.

The European championship debutants were showing no fear fighting for every ball and they should have gone ahead as Virginia Kirchberger was left unmarked from a corner and she flicked her right shoot shot just wide of Sarah Bouhaddi’s goal.

However the drama then struck as they took the lead on 27 minutes as Lisa Makas skipped the French challenges to blast the ball into the net from just inside the box leaving Bouhaddi with no chance of saving.

This sparked a good reaction from the French who needed a late penalty to overcome Iceland on matchday one when Marie Laure Delie crossed for Grace Geyoro but she hooked her effort wide from close range when she really in truth should have scored.

Le Sommer thought she had pulled the French level on 35 minutes but her shot lacked power and was once again saved by Zinsberger. On the stroke of the break Austria had a superb opportunity to go two ahead as Makas beat the offside trap before her shot was saved by the onrushing Bouhaddi.

France came out the second half much better and on 48 minutes were denied by a great save from the superb Zinsburger as she tipped a Renard header over the crossbar.

Zinsburger was called into action once again as she made yet another excellent save this time with her legs as she kept out Le Sommers low shot from point blank range.

However France did grab their equaliser when on 51 minutes Amandine Henry got on the end of a Elise Bussaliga corner to head into the net.

Henry was then denied a second on 75 minutes as she got on the end of another corner but this time her thumping header was saved by Zinsburger as she tipped it over the bar.

This was the final clear cut chance of the game as Austria held on for a famous point.
