At Alexandra Palace last night it wasn’t London Calling it was Edison Miranda calling saying “I’m a boxer get me out of here!”Tony Bellew worked well last night staying behind his jab and not allowing the season Colombian to take control or keep using his head as he covered up well and took control of the contest.

The fight stayed pretty even up to the 6th although I had Bellew just edging it working well behind the jab and keeping Miranda at bay. The 7th was a slightly slower affair and then in the 8th ‘The Bomber’ stepped on the gas catching Miranda towards the end of the round with some good shots. In the 9th Bellew started fast and caught Miranda on the far side of the ring with thumping body shot, the Colombian went down and clearly didn’t want to continue. All in all a good nights work from Bellew who’ll is now the WBC Interntaional Light-Heavyweight Champion and will now be looking for a second crack at a world title with in a year according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.

After his win Bellew had the following to say – “Only A-list guys beat Edison Miranda so what does that make me?”, “He’s proven World class. I don’t know how good I am but I work hard and I improve all the time. I have been asking for this type of fights for a long time and we should be seeing more names of Edison’s calibre coming to the UK to fight me.

Colchester’s Lee Purdy put of a cracking performance stopping Argentina’s Gumersindo Carrasco inside 4 rounds to take the IBF International Welterweight Title. Purdy took control from the off getting a knockdown in the first and unloading on the Argi with some more big punches in rounds 2 and 3. The Argi went down twice in the 4th before the ref called a halt to the action as Carrasco’s team threw the towel in.

Another cracking contest on the Betfair sponsored show was Chris Evangelou v Danny Connor for the Southern Area Light-Welterweight Title this bout turned into a real slugfest with both guys putting on a real crowd pleasing performance. But after 12 rounds there could only be one winner and that was Connor 98-94 on ref Ken Curtis’ scorecard much to the upset of the Team Evangelou fans, I had Connor just edging it on the night but it was a close one.

Erick Ochieng took just 5 rounds to stop Northolt’s Ryan Toms to take the English Light-Middleweight Title up until the stoppage the fight was a pretty even affair with Toms taking the fight to Ochieng in the second. Ochieng got warned for use of the head in round 3 and Toms for me looked in control in the 4th but unable to land any decent body shots due to Ochieng’s crouching stance. As the 5th kicked off Ochieng started to take control dropping Toms with a hurtful left hook to the body, Toms looking tired made the count only to get dropped again with a right hook to the body.

Brentwood Lightweight Martin J.Ward made his pro debut taking on Warkshire’s Kristian Laight with Ward all over him from the off winning his first outing 40-36 over 4 rounds.

Results in brief – Canning Town Crusierweight Wadi Camacho destroyed Andy Ingram inside 2 rounds with the towel coming in from the Ingram camp. John Ryder continued his winning streak beating Sandor Micsko with sheer volume of punches and pressure he KO’d the Hungarian inside 2 rounds. Ryan Taylor also stopped Gyula Vajda inside 2 rounds. Whilst Kal Yafai stopped Richard Voros in just 90 seconds of the bout.

All in all a great show from Matchroom to kick off the new season.
