Benmadigan has dropped to a career-low mark and looks cracking value at 10/1 in the 4.10 at Southwell.
Nicky Richards’ charge has not scored since June 2010, but that win came on quick ground at Worcester off a mark of 107 and he now races off just 83.
The 10-year-old also ran some solid races last year when placed off marks of 105 and 108, and although he has not been at his best in his last three starts those runs have come under a claimer and he now gets reunited with Fearghal Davis who partnered him to his last success.
Another plus is that he is a course winner, and given that he has been placed off a mark as high as 113 and has his ideal conditions he looks overpriced at 10/1 for such a well-handicapped horse.
The hat-trick seeking favourite Billy Blade is the obvious one that he has to beat, but that one has won his last two races in testing conditions and this afternoon’s ground is the complete opposite.
This is also his third run in 18 days, and at the odds on offer he simply has to be taken on.
To me Benmadigan boasts excellent credentials to lower his colours, and there is no way in my mind that he should be available to back at double figure odds.
