Brunello has been given a chance by the handicapper and makes plenty of appeal at 10/1 in the 5.00 at Catterick today.

Phil Kirby’s gelding only has one success to his name, with that victory coming in a 1m 4f contest on the fibresand at Southwell last February off a mark of 60.

However he has posted come solid efforts since then, including when beaten just a short-head by Blazing Desert at Wolverhampton off a mark of 63 in March and when fourth of 13 to Jan Smutts on the turf at Catterick off 62 four starts back.

He now gets into this off just 58 having shaped better than his final finishing position suggests last time out at Catterick over 1m 6f where he raced up with the pace until taking up the lead 6 out and weakening when headed two from home to eventually finish a 10 3/4 length 6th of 11 to Maska Pony.

The drop back to 1m 4f could well see him in far better light judged on that effort, and his best runs – including his victory – have come over the trip.

He also has the services of Declan Cannon in the saddle who takes another 3lb off his back, and in a weak looking contest where a line can be put through many of the runners he looks cracking each-way value at the odds on offer.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Brunello (10/1 Stan James – BOG)
