Buckstay looks worth an each-way bet at 18/1 in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket today (3.25).
Peter Chapple-Hyam’sseven year-old has a good record at the venue having won and been placed twice in four starts over course and distance.
He finished a fine head second in the 2015 Silver Bunbury Cup and was also far from disgraced in this contest 12 months ago when a keeping on 3 3/4 lengths ninth of 16 to Golden Steps off a mark of 109.
Buckstay went on to beat the smart Mitchum Swagger by a head in a conditions’ contest at Lingfield off an official rating of 110 and then ran a blinder to finish a 1 1/2 lengths fourth to Breton Rock in a Group 2 at Doncaster.
He rounded off the campaign with a solid two-length fifth of 18 to Libriza Breeze in the ultra-competitive Challenge Cup Handicap at Ascot and is now able to race off a rating of 108.
That that gives him every chance on the pick of his form and although well-beaten on seasonal reappearance in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last month, that race was over 6f and the step back up to 7f is sure to suit.
He has a 27% strike rate over it, plenty of experience in big field handicaps and also goes well for Jamie Spencer who has won on him three times and been placed on two occasions in 12 starts.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Buckstay (18/1 BetVictor, William Hill – BOG)
