Burton Port is the class act in the Betfred Bowl at Aintree today (3.05) and rates a solid punt at 9/2.

Nicky Henderson’s gelding was a  top class novice back in 2010 when he finished an excellent second to Weapons Amnesty in the RA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival before going one better over today’s course and distance.

He then went on to finish runner-up to Diamond Harry in the Hennessy at Newbury before enduring a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.

The eight-year-old was off the track for 447 days before making his belated reappearance in the Denman Chase at Newbury back in February, and he showed that he retained all his ability when being beaten just 1/2 a length by  Long Run.

He made his stable companion pull out all the stops, and then went on to run a blinder in the Cheltenham Gold Cup when staying on to be beaten 8 lengths into fourth behind Synchronised.

That is the best form in the field and with AP McCoy in the saddle and conditions to suit he looks better value than his stable companion Riverside Theatre who had an extremely hard race when winning the Ryanair.

Barry Geraghty had to be at his brilliant and forceful best to get him up close home after a series of mistakes, and it could well be that the race has left its mark.

Wither way, I think Burton Port is the stronger of the two and expect him to prevail for popular owner Trevor Hemmings.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Burton Port (9/2 generally available – use BOG firms)
