The potentially well-treated Claude Monet takes a marked drop in trip in the 2.50 at Lingfield today and looks worth a wager at 20/1.

The gelding has some fair form when placed in three maidens last season when trained by Jeremy Noseda, including when finishing runner-up to Uriah Heep (rated 87 at the time) at Goodwood over 1m 2f and third to the the now 83-rated Muharrer at Pontefract over the same distance.

He then failed to cut any ice when well beaten at Sandown on his reappearance after which he joined the Simon Dow yard.

The four-year-old also didn’t show much on nhis first two starts for his new handler, but then put in a much better display here when finishing fourth of 13 to Posh Boy over 1m 2f off a mark of 64.

He showed plenty of early pace to track the leaders that day and after taking up the running four out led until being headed approaching the last before only being able to keep on at the once pace.

Although he hasn’t backed up that effort in three subsequent starts he didn’t run too badly on the polytrack surface at Kempton over 1m 2f on the second of those where he again showed plenty of early dash to lead until being headed over a furlong out and weakening to finish a 5 1/2 length 8th of 11 to Exclusive Waters.

Cionnections have now decided to drop him back to a mile, and to me that makes him interesting in this off a career-low mark of just 58.

He is a headstrong sort who likes to race up with the pace, and the way he has been running in the above races suggests that it is well worth a try.

If Andrea Atzeni can bounce him out and attack from what looks a lovely draw in stall 4 he could take some pegging back, and at the odds on offer looks well worth an each-way play in a wide open contest.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Claude Monet (20/1 BetVictor – BOG)
