Tully East looks nicely treated on the pick of his form and worth an each-way punt at 20/1 in the Close Brothers Novices’ handicap Chase that brinsg proceedings to a close on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival (17.30).
Trained in Ireland by Alan Fleming, the seven-year-old finsihed runner-upmto Idenity Thieg in a bumper and went on to score trwice over hurdles last season.
In the last of those at Punchestown he travelled well throughout before forging clear to score comfortably by 3 1/4 lengths off a mark of 120.
He then found Grade 1 compamy too hot at Leopardstown before posting a cracking effort to finish an 8 1/2 length fourth of 24 to Ibis Du Rheu in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at this venue off a rating of 140.
Tully East kicked off this camapign with a win on chasing debut at Thurles and was then pitched in the deep end when a well beaten sixth to Min in a Grade 1 at Leopardstown.
He was then far from disgraced when second to Ball D’arc in the 3-runner Grade 3 affair at Navan, and the winner has won again since.
The selection loosk to have been brought along steadily with handicaps and this race in mind and a mark of 138 looks exploitable judged on his run in the Martin Pipe.
