John Coffey races off a career-low mark on his first start for Mick Appleby in the finale at Southwell today (5.30) and at 4/1 rates the best bet on the card.

The gelding is still a maiden after 11 starts but did run some solid races when trained by Dandy Nicholls which would give him major claims in this low-grade affair.

He was beaten just 1/2 a length into third by Glennten over 6f at Wolverhampton three starts back where he showed plenty of early dash to chase the leaders and stayed on strongly at the death before being held close home off a mark of 52.

The four-year-old had previously run a couple of races of higher marks most notably when third of 16 to Ingleby Angel in a 6f handicap at Redcar off a mark of 53 last August

He chased the leaders and kept on well to be beaten just 2 lengths, and the form looks strong in the context of this contest.

The son of Acclamation also didn’t tun too badly last time out at Lingfield where he dwelt at the start before staing on well to finish a never nearer 3 1/2 length fourth of 9 to Valdaw off a rating of 52.

He now gets into this off 51, and it would be no surprise to see his new handler eek a bit of improvement out of him at a track where he does particularly well.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win John Coffey (4/1 Betfred, Hills, Stan James – BOG)
