Counsel appeals on handicap debut

Posted on by Dave Metcalf

Counsel makes his eagerly awaited handicap debut in the 4.30 at Doncaster and at 6/1 is taken to make it a winning one.

Sir Michael Stoute’s looked far from the finished article when shaping with promise in three maiden last year and looks the type who will come into his own in this type of event.

The son of Dansili went into my notebook when putting in a really eye-catching effort on his final start at Yarmouth where he finished fifth of 15 to Swedish Sailor in a hot little 1m contest.

He travelled well behind the leaders but was unable to find a change of gear when the pace quickened, and eventually kept on at the one pace to be beaten 8 1/2 lengths.

That second home Noble Mission looked a smart prospect when scoring at Newbury and both Nordic Quest and Three bards – who he had well behind – have gone on to score.

That makes the form look solid, and an opening mark of 74 could well underestimate Counsel’s ability.

He looks the type who will relish the step up in trip this afternoon, and having been gelded in the winter could well develop into a really useful middle distance handicapper.

His trainer is also in terrific form having saddled three winners from his last three runners, and at the odds on offer he makes plenty of appeal.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Counsel (6/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
