Droitwich ABC is looking to make a fundamental difference in society by opening the door of opportunity to many, via the discipline of boxing.
Bethany Trueman, coach, registered boxer and trustee for the club, is acting as a principal catalyst to help open a new purpose built gym in the town, looking to attract and inform everybody of the benefits boxing can bring into a person’s life. Intent on showing that the sport is not just for the elitist, Bethany is looking to try and attract a diverse sub section from the population, offering inclusive boxing for groups such as those with special and additional needs. The intention is to be able to offer these groups a platform to participate in a sport they might otherwise struggle to be involved in, but most importantly with the goals of keeping fit and having fun, in a safe environment.
Another major objective of the club moving forward, is to strengthen the participation of female athletes, by offering sessions as part of the curriculum within schools. This will hopefully lead to a larger percentage of females who may then go on to box in amateur competitions, similar to what Bethany herself has achieved. With the likes of Nicola Adams and Savannah Marshall out there as role models, the inspiration to want to follow in similar footsteps should hopefully attract the girls and ladies to step through the doors of the club and give it a go.
For those looking to achieve honours within the sport, there’s no shortage of talent. The club boasts national and regional boxers, many who have experienced success at these levels, and with the club recently receiving Clubmark accreditation, the opportunities to bond with the community and reach that untapped potential is massive. The Clubmark will allow the club to work closer with institutions such as education, the probation service and those from other community settings.
