Double Czech is a fascinating contender on his nursery debut in the 4.15 at Goodwood and looks worth an interest at 20/1.

Amamda Perrett’s colt is yet to trouble the judge in three starts in maiden company, but has shaped with promise on each occasion and ran better than the bare result last time out when fourth of 7 to Fire Fighting over 7f at Epsom.

He showed plenty of pace to track the winner that day, but after being ridden to try and make a challange two from home got bumped with a furlong to run before weakening to be beaten just over 10 lengths.

However he was not knocked about and allowed to come home in his own time once it was clear he would not be winning, and it was an effort which suggested to me that he was one to keep on side when dropped back in trip and going handicapping.

The son of Bushranger had previously shown plenty of early dash on his debut here over 6f when slowly away but quickly making up lost ground and then again at Newbury on his penultimate start over 7f where he weakened a furlong from home to finish a 5 3/4 length 8th of 10 to Recanted.

It’s no surprise to see connections now drop him back to 6f based on his runs so far, and if – as expected – it does suit then an opening mark of 70 could be on the lenient side.

It’s also interesting that connections are fitting him with cheekpieces for the first time, and with in in-form Franny Norton in the saddle it would be no surprise to see him step up significantly on what he has shown so far and play a leading role in this.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Double Czech (20/1 BetVictor, Boylesports, Paddy Power – BOG)
