Popular Crawley featherweight Ben ‘Duracell’ Jones lost out on Commonwealth honours on Saturday night when he lost a split decision to Doncaster’s Jason Cunnigham over 12 rounds on Mo Prior and Mickey Helliet’s York Hall card.
Cunningham started faster but as the fight progress Jones took control with Cunningham on his bike in the later rounds as Jones became the aggressor with Cunningham sustaining a cut right eye in the 10th.
At the end the judges 2 from Yorkshire gave it to Cunningham and the South East judge gave it to Jones with scores of 116-113, 115-113 and 113-115.
This would make a good re-match on another card later this year.
Bexleyheath super-fly Sammy Cantwell got back to winning form crusing to a 40-36 points victory over Gary Reeve.
Suffolk heavyweight Fabio Wardley got off to a great start in the pro’s beating Jakub Wojcik 40-35 in their 4 rounder, with Wardley dropping the Pole in the opener much to the delight of the fans who’d travelled down from Ipswich.
Super-Lightweight Tony Buttigieg got off to a winning start as a pro beating experienced journeyman Kristian Laight 40-36 over 4 rounds.
Super-Welter Hollywood Josh beat Victior Edagha 40-35 over 4 rounds dropping Edagha in the 1st witha right hand.
Popular Watford middleweight Elliott Matthews got a last minute sub in Chessington’s Richard Harrison and Matthews took the bout over 4 rounds 40-36.
Other pro debuts on the night were welterweight Ralphy Ibrahim who drew over 4 rounds 38-38 against Ryan Hardy and lightweight Fateh Benko who beat Croat Antonia Horvatic 40-36 in their 4 rounder.
