England make it 2 from 2 in Holland

Posted on by Joshua Bunting

Goals from Fran Kirby and Jodie Taylor saw England win 2-0 against Spain in what was a fantastic match in Breda.  The game started in a frantic fashion with Spain close to taking the lead inside one minute as on an extremely greasy pitch as Steph Houghton slipped the ball feel to Vicky Losada and she fired her shot wide.

England then had a goal disallowed on 6 minutes as Millie Bright headed into the net from a free-kick though replays say that the linesman made the incorrect decision as the Chelsea player was clearly onside.

However England then went on the break immediately and took the lead as Fran Kirby was played in and she slotted the ball past Sandra Panos in the Spanish goal. As the rain lashed down this made it very hard to play football as the pitch got soggier and soggier.

England should have been further ahead on 11 minutes as Houghton was left unmarked from a corner but she could only fire over the top. Karen Bardsley was then called into action for the first time on 13 minutes as she kept out a low Alexia Putellas shot.

The game settled down slightly as the rain thumped down even more a torrential downpour the next chance not arriving until 35 minutes in as Losada was played through by Jenni Hormoso but her effort was well blocked by Lucy Bronze.

On the stroke of halftime Bronze came to the rescue once again as she made another good block as she slid in front of Hormoso’s rasping drive from the edge of the area.

Spain started the second half much better and could have levelled the tie when Putellas saw her strike well blocked by Jordan Nobbs at the last minute.

There was then to come the most controversial moment of the match as Ellen White was adjudged to have handled the ball inside her box as she slipped and fell on the surface however the referee initially pointed to the spot but then waved it away.

Mark Sampsons team were close to their second on minutes as the impressive Nobbs played in Jill Scott but she fired her effort over the top. However the game was put to bed on 85 minutes through Taylor who notched her fourth goal of the tournament as she was played and to slot into the net.
