Burnley’s Tarkowski withdraws from England’s World Cup camp

Burnley defender James Tarkowski has withdrawn from England’s World Cup camp as he is due to undergo a hernia operation.

The 28-year-old, who earned his first England cap in March, was named on Gareth Southgate’s five-man standby list and had been training with the national team.

But following assessment it has been agreed that Tarkowski requires surgery and he will not play any part at the World Cup.

A statement from Burnley said the former Brentford centre-back is expected to be fit for pre-season training when it begins in early July.

England have confirmed there are no plans to call up a replacement defender at this time.
