England v Spain – The Preview

If the odds are anything to go by then England may as well not bother turning up at Wembley today for their friendly against Spain (5.15pm KO, Live on ITV 1).

Fabio Capello’s men are friendless in the market and out to 5/1 as punters plunge on the world and European champions.

Spain could be backed at even money earlier in the week but are now odds-on across the board and as short 8/11 for victory.

The game may be just a friendly, but it is vitally important for England in their preparation for next summer’s European Championships as they try and put together a winning formula which will make them live contenders.

In recent times they have struggled to put such plans together under Capello and a trip to Ukraine and Poland in seven months’ time will present the Italian with his final opportunity to get things right.

He steps down from his post at the end of Euro 2012 and will want to do so on a high.

A positive performance against Spain would help to raise spirits in the camp and put down an early marker to the rest of Europe.

However England’s recent record against their opponents is not good, and that fact has obviously not been lost on unpatriotic punters.

In truth they will struggle to win this given their recent form in friendlies and despite being 5/1 cannot be backed with any confidence.

However there is no way that the Daily Sport can back against our boys, so a small wager on England in the Draw/No bet market is put forward as a patriotic punt at 5/2.
