Frankelstein returns at Newbury

Posted on by Dave Metcalf

All roads lead to Newbury today where the monster that is Frankel makes his eagerly awaited reappearance in the JLT Lockinge Stakes (3.40).

Sir Henry Cecil’s unbelievable colt has won all nine of his career starts and ended las year as the highest rated horse in the world following four successive Group One successes.

The son of Galielo – dubbed Frankelstein because he is such a mionster – destroyed his rivals with a breathtaking frontb running display in the 2000 Guineas and went on to land the Sussex Stakes and the QEII Stakes with an awesome display of authority

He sas recovered from an injury scare earlier in the year and looked like an equine version of Arnold schwarzenegger when impressing in a workout before racing at Newmarket earlier this month.

His handler has been pleased wikth hsi progress, and bookmakers make him a 1/3 shot to make it win number 10

cecil told his website: “Considering Frankel had a 10-day setback I am pleased with the progress he has made in preparation for the Lockinge at Newbury on Saturday.

“Some of the opposition have had a race, which is a great advantage, but I feel he has done enough to give a good account of himself.

“One thing I am pretty sure about is that he will come on for the race and will be a stronger and more settled horse this year.”

The horse expected to give Frankel most to think about, Excelebration, has already been beaten three times by the world’s highest-rated racehorse.

The former Marco Botti inmate looked good when making a winning debut for Aidan O’Brien in the Gladness Stakes at the Curragh in the hands of the trainer’s son, Joseph, who retains the ride today.

“It will be the first time I’ve ridden against Frankel and he is obviously a great horse, so I’m looking forward to it,” said the jockey.

“Excelebration won very well in the Curragh and you’d like to think he’ll improve for that as it was his first run of the year.

“We just go into the race knowing our horse is in good form and we’ll just do our best and see what happens.”

He is a top priced 3/1 to cause an upset.

However this race is all about Frankel, and I fully expect him to stroll to another victory.
