Will Grigg continued his hot streak in front of goal on Tuesday night as his late goal earned Paul Cooks Wigan Athletic another win in their Sky Bet League One promotion bid over Oxford United at the DW Stadium.
With three minutes left of the tie Grigg broke the deadlock as he fired in a pass across goal from fellow substitute Devante Cole.
The Northern Ireland international who now has 25 goals to his name this season wasn’t named in the starting eleven as January signing from Sunderland James Vaughan started as a lone striker but once he was called upon he made an instant impact.
Wigan who now move three points clear at the top of the table had a frustrating night against a sturdy Oxford United side as they were denied by keeper Simon Eastwood most notably from Michael Jacobs and Max Power.
Power also rattled the crossbar in the first-half after he was played one on one by Vaughan and the former Tranmere Rovers midfielder beat Eastwood all ends up but to his misfortune saw the ball hit the underside of the bar and bounce back out.
Karl Robinson’s side had their chances to go ahead as on 54 minutes Canice Carroll fired a stunning volley wide of goal when it looked like it had beaten Latics keeper Christian Walton as he sprung low to his left.
With four games left, Wigan are eight points ahead of third-place Shrewsbury who lost to Charlton on Tuesday, while Oxford are not yet clear of relegation danger, sitting four points above Rochdale who have a game in hand.
