Maximus Maridius looks decent each-way value at 14/1 in the 5.05 at Doncaster today.

Sam Drinkwater’s charge got stuck in the mud last time out on handicap debut off an opening mark of 111 but the asessor has been quick to drop him 3lb and he had previously shaped with promise on a couple of occasions.

In the first of those at Leicseter on hurdles’ debut at leicester he pulled hard and took up th running to be clear four out.

He then hit three out and after getting headed two from home before weakening to finish a 29 length sicth of 14 to London Prize.

The race was decent for the grade and the fifth and eight home have both won since.

Maximus Maridius then found class 2 company too hot when a distant sixth of seven to the highly-regarded Elgin at Kempton before shaping better than the finishing position suggest when a 23 length fifth of 14 to Strong Pursuit at Hareford.

He settled much better in the latter in mid-divsion and closed three from home despite racing very wide before weakening out of contention on testing ground.

It was an effort which suggested he could have more to offer in handicaps and the better ground he now encounters looks sure to suit.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Maximus Maridius (14/1 Stan James – BOG)
