Mick’s Michelangelo too big at 16/1

Unex Michelangelo has been cut some slack by the handicapper and looks overpriced at 16/1 in the amateur riders handicap at Doncaster today (5.10).

Mick Easterby’s gelding is not the easiest to catch right, but is a useful sort at this level on his day as he showed when running out an easy six length winner of an amateur riders contest at Beverley off a mark of 61 four starts back.

The assessor hit him with a 9lb rise for that runaway success, and he duly failed to cut any ice in his next two starts.

However there was much more to like about his latest effort over a mile at Nottingham when staying on to finish fourth of 15 to Lord Franklin on soft ground and he has since been dropped another 1lb.

The five-year-old now gets into this off 67, and taking Joanna Mason’s 3lb claim into account is just 3lb higher than when romping home at Notts.

It gives him big chance at the weights, and the step back up to 1m 2f is a big plus.

Connections are also now fitting him with the cheekpieces for the first time, and if they have the desired effect there is little doubt that he is weighted to play a leading role in this on the pick of his form.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Unex Michelangelo (16/1 Paddy Power, Sky Bet – BOG)
