Anton Chigurh has slipped to a dangerous mark and with conditions to suit is strongly fancied at 8/1 to take advantage and land the 3.30 at Newbury today.

Tom Dascombe’s chrage developed into a useful handicapper last year when winning three times in the mud.

The last of those successes came on heavy ground over a mile at Haydock where after being outpaced three from home and encountering trouble in running he ran on strongly to get up and beat Vito Voltera by a length off a mark of 88.

He started off this campaign off a mark of 92 on the back of that effort and showed little in his first five starts.

However his last two efforts have been far more encouraging and he looks to be working his way back to form at a time when the ground has come right for him.

In the first of those he kept on from the rear to finish 5th of 11 to Tinghir over a mile at Ascot, and he then really caught the eye last time out when 5th of 15 to Gworn over a mile at Haydock on soft ground.

Held-up that day, he was denied a clear run when making headway a furlong from home and then kept on really well to be beaten 2 1/2 lengths without ever quite threatening to get to the leaders.

It was an effort which suggested he was well worth a try at today’s 1m 2f, and with the handicapper having dropped him another 1lb he now gets into this off 84.

That is 4lb lower thna when last successful and gives him a huge shout at the weights now that he has the heavy ground that he relishes.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Anton Chigurh (8/1 BetVictor, Paddy Power – BOG)
