Petaluma makes her eagerly awaited handicap debut in the 8.20 at Pontefract and has to be of serious interest at 9/1 form what looks a lenient mark.
Mick Channon’s filly shaped with bags of promise on her juvenile debut at Newbury last July when keeping on nicely to finish 5th of 10 to Zingana.
She was then not seen in action until reappearing at Newbury in April, and put in a really eye-catching effort when staying on from the rear to finish a keeping on 6 3/4 length fourth of 14 to Forest Row under tender handling.
The daughter of Teofilo was then pitched into listed company on her latest start at Newmarket in the Pretty Polly Stakes and after making headway four from home she got outpaced before keeping on again to finish a remote 7th of 10 to Kailini.
That company was clearly too hot for her, but she is now qualified for handicaps and her opening mark of 73 could certainly underestimate her ability judged on what I have seen in her three runs.
I think that she is potentially far better than that, and connections seem to have found her a nice opening at a level where she should be very competitive.
