Monbeg Dude has plenty going for him in the 2.10 at Cheltenham today and looks decent value at 8/1.

Michael Scuadmore’s gelding confirme himself as a fast improving staying chaser last season, winning a Grade 3 18-runner contest here over an extended 3m 3f before landing the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow off a 10lb higher mark of 128.

He then finsihed a fair third to Well Refreshed at Haydock before being pulled up behind Bobs Worth when pitched into the deep end in the Gold Cup at the Festival.

The eight-year-old was then off the track for 218 days before making a highly encouraging comeback here over hurdles when finishing third of 10 to Kings Palace.

He then put in a cracking effort last time out when attempting to retain his  crown in the Grade 3 Murphy handicap Chase at this venue when finishing fourth fo 13 to Alvarado off today’s mark of 138.

The son of Witness Box travelled strongly into the contest from the rear of the field that day and took up the running two from home before making a mistake at the last and weakening on the flat to be beaten just over 4 lengths.

He arguably hit the front too soon that day, as he needs holding up to the last possible minute to be seen at his best.

However it was still an excellent run, and he is entitled to come on again with it under his belt.

Although he now drops back in trip to an extended 3m 1f today I think he has the ability to cope with it, and unlike the front two in the market – Theatre Guide and Prince Of Pirates – has proven form at the track which is a major plus.

Both Theatre Guide and Prince Of Prites ran poorly on their sole try over fences at this venue, and it may well be that they will be seen to better effect on a flatter track.

I also think that Monbeg Dude has far stronger form to his name than the latter despite them being on the same rating, and with Tom Scudamore in the saddle the selection looks a solid each-way wager at the 8/1 on offer with Stan James who are paying 1/4 odds 1,2,3.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Monbeg Dude (8/1 Stan James – BOG, 1/4 odds 1,2,3)
