Shakopee disappointed last time out but with underfoot conditions now in his favour makes plenty of appeal at 8/1 in the 4.50 at Newmarket today.

Luca Cumani’s gelding looked one to keep onside when showing a smart turn of foot to easily land a 1m 2f contest at Doncaster back in July and ran a blinder when an unlucky second to Barsanti in a hot 15-runner handicap at York on his penultimate outing.

After being held-up well off the pace, Shakopee was making stealthy headway when denied a clear run a furlong from home and after being forced to switch finsihed off strongly to be gaining all the way to the line.

It was a cracking effort given how the race panned out and this looks a weaker contest.

Although Shakopee failed to back that up when a well-beaten last time out at Haydock, the testing conditions were totally against him and I am more than prepared to put a l.ine through that effort.

With the return to a quicker surface in his favour a reproduction of his run behind Barsanti would make him tough to beat.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts win Shakopee (8/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
