St Malo looks to have got in lightly on handicap debut in the 5.25 at York today and is of major interest at 6/1.
Roger Varian’s gelding progressed in three outings last season, finishing a promising fifth on debut before being beaten just a neck into second behind Vermeulen in a 13-runner maiden at Kempton.
He then opened his account in style at Newcastle when only having to be ridden out to slam Mutadaffeq by six lengths.
St Malo won with any amount in hand and the runner-up has since gone on to land a handicap by 3 1/2 lengths to be rated 82.
That gives the form a boost and suggests that the assessor has takne a real chance in allotting St Malo an opening mark of just 82.
It makes him look potentially thrown in at the weights and he looks the type that should win plenty of races this season and hails from a yard in good form at present.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way St Malo (6/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
