Irish raider Start Me Up makes plenty of appeal at 14/1 in the finale at Cheltenham today (4.40).
Charlie Swan’s gelding was a decent sort over hurdles and has shown improved form over fences since beating Berties Dream at Navan back in December.
The eight-year-old finished an excellent third to the ultra progressive Sea Bass on his handicap debut at Limerick and was then still travelling strongly when stumbling and unseating his rider three out in the Grand National Trial at Punchestown won by Portrait King.
He then showed he was none the worse for that mishap when a close up third ion a Grade 2 at Navan last time out where he led on the run-in only to be caught in the shadows of the post.
Four Commanders, who finished a fine third in the national Hunt Chase yesterday, was just a nose in front of him that day and the form looks pretty solid.
It’s fair to say that most like Irish raiders he hasn’t appear to have been done any favours by the handicapper off a mark of 135.
However he looks the type who is getting better with every run and has plenty more to offer, and another plus is that he has the services of Nina Carberry in the saddle.
She is a terrific rider to have on your side in these amateur events, and at the odds on offer Start Me Up looks a great each-way play.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Start Me Up (14/1 bet365 – BOG and 1/4 odds 1,2,3,4,5)
