Having become dangerously well-treated Sultan Baybars is a fascinating contender now dropped to 6f for the first time in the 5.35 at Pontefract today and looks worth an each-way punt at 10/1.

The four-year-old won on debut back in September 2016 when in the care of Roger Varian and went on to post a couple of solid efforts last year when runner-up twice at Sandown off marks of 88 and 89.

In the first of those, 88, he should plenty of early pace to lead and kept on well when headed to go down by 1 3/4 lengths to Mojito in a class 3.

The winner is a progressive sort who went on to win his next two starts to be rated 104. It was a solid effort from the selection in trying to give him 5lb and the third, fourth and fifth home have all gone on to taste success.

It gives the form a rock solid look in relation to this lower grade class 5 contest and makes a career-low rating of 72 for Sultan Baybars look exploitable.

He has also shaped well on several occasions this season for David O’Mera over 7f and 1m, showing plenty of speed to race up with the pace before fading late on.

It suggests he is well worth a crack at this and the tongue-tie also goes on for the first time, and that’s inetresting giving how he has been finishing off his races.

So from a good draw in stall 2 he looks a very interesting contender in this if ridden positively and worth an each-way play at the odds on offer.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Sultan Baybars (10/1 Ladbrokes, Paddy Power – BOG)
