Tantamount worth a tickle at 14/1

Tantamount has been given a chance by the handicapper and makes plenty of appeal at 14/1 in the 4.00 at Kelso today for the in-form yard of Lucinda Russell.

The gelding showed progress from throughout 2013, and looked sure to win more races when running out the smooth winner on a class 3 contest at Aintree off a mark of 106.

After being held-up off the pace, Tantamount made stealthy headway to take up the running two from home before drawing readily clear after the last to win by 9 lengths.

The handicapper put him up 10lb for that easy success, but Tanatmount ran a cracker off his revised rating of 116 when a 1 3/4 length runner-up to Any Given Moment at Musselburgh.

That resulted in a further 3lb rise to 119, and the six-year-old was subsquently on the sidelines for 297 days.

It’s fair to say that he has run well below par in two starts this season since returning to action, but the yard are now in much better form and Tantamount is now able to race off 115 after being given a 97 day break to freshen up.

That makes him look competitive judged on his second to Any Given Moment, and taking Craign Nichol’s 3lb claim into account he is just 6lb higher than when romping to victory at Aintree.

It’s also interesting that the latter came after a break of 72 days, so it could well be that first time back from a break is the best time to catch him.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Tantamount (14/1 Betfred, BetVictor, Stan James, William Hill – BOG)
