Trumpet a Major fancy to blow away rivals

Posted on by Dave Metcalf

Trumpet Major takes a drop in class in the 2.35 at Goodwood and at 7/1 rates good value to bounce back and land the spoils.

Richard Hannon’s charge enjoyed a good juvenile campaign, winning three times including at this venue.

He ran a cracker on his final start to finish a 1 1/2 lengths fifth of 9 to Parish Hall in the Group 1 Dewhurst at Newmarket, and looked an exciting prospect when bolting up in the Craven Stakes at headquarters on his reappearance when beating Crius by 5 lengths.

The son of Arakan was strongly fancied for the 2000 Guineas on the back of that effort, and ran a terrific race to finish a 3 3/4 length fourth of 18 to the might Camelot.

He then disappointed when last to Power in the Irish equivalent, but something was clearly amiss that day as his run was too bad to be true.

Connections have since given him a nice break to freshen him up, and if running anywhere the form he showed at Newmarket he would have outstanding claims in this Group 3 contest despite having to shoulder a penalty.

Given that he was sent off just 8/1 for the English 2000 Guineas, the 7/1 on offer for him in this weaker contest looks too big.

With Richard Hughes, who us  riding better than ever this week, in the saddle a huge run looks on the cards and in my book he is the one they all have to beat.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Trumpet Major (7/1 bet365 – BOG 1/4 odds 1,2,4, Hills – BOG, Stan James)
