WORLDCHAMPS_VANGERWENWorld champion Michael van Gerwen plans to dominate darts – but says there will never be another Phil Taylor.

Taylor this month enters his 26th world championship aiming to get his hands on darts’ biggest prize for the 17th time.

He’s the bookmakers’ favourite, ahead of defending champion van Gerwen.

The No 1 seed starts his title defence against Bradford’s Joe Cullen on the opening night on Thursday, December 18, while Taylor meets German qualifier Jyhan Artut in the first round at Alexandra Palace.

Van Gerwen rates Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson as his major threats for the title – and says ‘The Power”s achievements will never be matched.

He said: “Phil has been at the top for many years and I have a lot of respect for him.

“I’ve been under pressure this year, have had to raise my game and Phil’s been doing that for many, many years.

“I want to win as many titles as possible and stay at the top for as long as I can.

“But I don’t think I will win as many titles as Phil has – and nobody else will either.

“The standard has raised too much for that. There are too many good players out there now.”

Van Gerwen goes into the world championship in good form having won both the World Grand Prix and European championships.

But he said: “The world championships is the tournament I really want to win.

“I don’t want to let myself down. I need to show my game if I’m going to win.”
