First Post is 3lb below his last winning mark and looks worth siding with at 16/1 in the 4.40 at Newbury today.

Derek Haydn Jones’ gelding won twice on the turf last season, with his last win coming in a 15-runner handicap over a mile at Goodwood off a mark of 74 in October.

Since then he has been kept busy on the all-weather and ran really well on his penultimate start when third of 13 to Squire Osbaldeston at Kempton over this afternoon’s trip of 1m 2f.

He kept on well from the rear that day to be be beaten just over 5 lengths off a mark of 78 and now gets into this off just 74.

That makes him well-treated on the pick of his form, and although he has yet to win over this trip in 8 starts the way he finished off at Kempton suggested that there is no reason why he shouldn’t be able to.

The seven-year-old is now on a mark from which he should be really competitive, and it’s inetresting that Dane O’Neill is now back in the saddle for the first time since riding him to his last success.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way First Post (16/1 Coral, Hills, Ladbrokes – BOG)
