Grand National 2014: Take a Chance on Roy and Buckers

Chance Du Roy and Buckers Bridge make plenty of appeal at 33/1 and 100/1 respectively in tomorrow’s Crabbie’s sponsored feature race at Aintree (4.15).

The former has a good record over the National fences, and registered his last success over them in the Becher Handicap Chase back in December.

He raced up with the pace that day, and after being three lengths down as they jumped the last only had to be driven out on the long run in to beat Baby Run by a length off a mark of 135.

Prior to that, his three runs over the unique fences had seen him finish second to Always Waining in the 2012 running of the Topham Chase, fall at the 14th in the Gradn Sefton Chase in the same year when travelling well in third position, and finish a fair ninth of 29 to Trio D’Alene in last year’s Topham.

That experience over the National fences is a major plus, and he looks to have a lovely racing weight off 10st 6lb despite being 8lb higher than when winning the Becher.

Philip Hobbs’ 10-year-old also has a decent strike rate having won six of his 21 races over fences, and shaped well in his latest start when fourth of seven to Restless Harry at Ascot.

He travelled best for much of the race before weakening late on after paying the price for a swift move to the front as they left the back straight, and that should have put him spot on for this.

Irish raider Bucker’s Bridge has some strong form in the book and a touch of class, and looks massively overpriced at 100/1.

Henry De Bromhead’s eight-year-old beat Twinlight in a Grade 2 contest at Navan last February and went on to finish a fair 11th of 22 to Carlingford Lough in the Galway Plate.

He returned to action this season with a 3 length win over Oscars Well over 2m 4f at Gowran Park and ran well last time out when third of 7 to subsequent Gold Cup runner-up On His Own in the Bobbyjoe Chase at Fairyhouse over 3m 1f.

The son of Pelder kept on that day to be beaten 16 3/4 lengths in what was a strongly run affair, and despite finishing 33 lengths in front of Lion Na Bearnai can be backed at three times the odds of that rival.

If staying the marathon 4m 4f trip looks capable of running a huge race in the hands of Andrew Lynch.
