Turtle Wars worth a wager at 13/2

Things haven’t gone to plan in two starts over fences this season for Turtle Wars but he looks on a handy mark and worth siding with at 13/2 in the 4.00 at Newbury today. The Nicky Henderson trained six-year-old shaped with plenty of promise on debut under rules when a staying on never nearer 3 1/2 lengths third of 12 to Whatmore at Bangor. The winner is a smart sort who has won twice since to be rated 141. Turtle Wars was the far from disgraced when ninth of 15 to Kildistart at Ascot before getting off the mark when comfortably landing a 15-runner maiden hurdle at Huntingdon by 1 1/4 lengths. That was a qualifier to the valuable Grade 3 EBF Novices’ Handicap hurdle at Sandown and he held every chance it it when in second place approaching the last before weakening to finish a 17 length fifth of 17 to Sam’s Gunner off a mark of 124. It was a solid effort from Turtle Wars and he looked the type to make up into a smart chaser. He got badly hampered when fifth of 14 to Warthog on chasing debut at Sandown in December when sent off favourite and then shaped as if amiss when pulled-up at Kempton behind Glen Forsa. Connections have since given him a break to freshen-up and he remains with potential and should be up to winning races off his current mark of 122.
