Clarets sign Luís from Benfica in 10th signing of the Summer transfer window

Burnley Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Florentino Luís who joins on a season-long loan from S.L Benfica, with the option to make it permanent next summer.

The 26-year-old – a Champions League regular for the Portuguese giants in recent years – leaves Benfica having won three domestic trophies playing in the heart of their midfield.

A tenacious and hardworking operator in the middle of the park, Luís expressed his delight at making the switch from Benfica to Burnley, commenting: “Playing in the Premier League has always been a dream of mine, so this is a special day for me and my family.

“It’s the biggest and best league in the world and to be joining Burnley at this time is really exciting for me.

“I am really looking forward to playing for this historic club and giving my all for the Burnley supporters.”

Born in Angola, Luís moved to Portugal at a young age and played in the academy of Real Massama, before joining Benfica’s set-up in 2010.

The midfielder had a successful rise through the Eagles’ Academy, making his Benfica ‘B’ team debut in 2016, before going on to make his senior debut in the Primeira Liga in February 2019.

A first goal for Benfica came a month after his debut, before he went on to spend the next two seasons on loan with Monaco and Getafe respectively, gaining more regular first team experience.

He returned to Benfica in the summer of 2022, and it proved to be his breakthrough season, featuring 54 times across the campaign, as the Portuguese giants clinched the Primeira Liga title.

He made 90 more appearances across the next two seasons, taking his overall tally to 181 in six seasons.

His last appearance for the Eagles was from the bench on Sunday night, in a 2-1 victory at Alverca.

Luís, who will wear squad number 16, becomes the Clarets’ tenth signing of the summer transfer window.
