Duke Cosimo has been knocking on the door of late and rates a solid bet at 4/1 to gain an overdue success in the 4.40 at Newcastle today now dropped back down in class.

Michael Herrington’s charge was last successful in a class 3 contest at Ripon 16 months ago when scoring off a rating of 78.

He went on to be placed twice off 83, including when fourth of 24 to Classic Seniority in the class 2 Ayr Bronze Cup.

The seven-year-old is now able to race off just 70 and comes int the race on the back of two solid efforts to make the frame at this venue.

In the last of those over this afternoon’s 5f trip he was beaten just 3/4 of a length when runner-up to Landing Night in a 14-runner class 2 contest.

He now drops back down into class 5 company off just 1lb higher and has a 40% strike rate in the grade having won twice and been placed twice from five starts in it.

That suggests a repeat of his laterst effort should be good enough to see him belatedly get his head in front where it matters most.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Duke Cosimo  (4/1 Betfred, Boylesports, Coral, William Hill – BOG)
