It’s not everyday that you have a piece of your body removed and then carry it around London in a tiny pot to go sightseeing and shopping – but oddly enough that’s exactly what happened to me yesterday!

Finding a tender lump behind the back of my ear several months ago, I never dreamed that it would grow to the size that it is now. What started off as nothing more than a spot suddenly became a hard and painful lump beneath my skin which turned out to be a cyst.

I’ve had cysts removed in the past as unfortunately for me it’s hereditary on my grandfathers side of the family, and as it turns out a lot of people live with cysts all over their bodies. Some aren’t bothersome, some are still undiscovered but others can be tender, increasing in size and rather unsightly.

The NHS decided a few years ago that cysts are simply cosmetic and not something to worry about, so my doctor advised me to just “live with it” rather than having it removed at my local GP clinic like before.

I guess its personal preference whether you keep or cut-off a cyst and down to how it affects your quality of life. Having a lump behind my ear made it difficult to sleep, sore to tie my hair up and felt generally repulsive when my boyfriend would run his fingers through my hair and hit a speed bump! Even writing this I’m gagging at how gross I found it all.

But we are all human, it’s a common part of life to develop lumps and bumps and unfortunately it’s something that happens to the majority of us. It’s not something that can be avoided or prevented, if it happens it happens.

After deciding that I could live with my head-invader no longer, I booked an appointment at a private clinic in London to have my cyst removed by Doctor Deniz Kanliada on Harley Street. The treatment itself was so quick and easy and I have no idea why I waited so long to do it!

Laying on an examination bed I had a local anaesthetic injection behind my ear and the doctor worked his magic. With a slice, scoop and stitch my cyst was gone in just several minutes and I asked if I could keep it as a souvenir of the alien that had been evicted from my body.

I find it absolutely fascinating how our bodies work, firstly to protect us and repair any damage, but also to grow abnormally, for glands to get blocked, skin to harden and lumps to form. Much like watching Dr Pimple Popper, it’s both squeamish and satisfying at the same time to see something gross taken out of the body.

Confronting my cyst face to face was such a cathartic experience and I was shocked at just how big it was as it resembled the size and shape of a baked bean – living in my head! After running a poll on social media to determine the sex of my cyst it was decided that she was female and called Priscilla.

So I took Priscilla for some celebratory shopping, lunch and sightseeing around London and we had the most wonderful afternoon together as I smiled at my neat and tidy stitches triumphantly. Perhaps it’s not something that you were expecting to hear about, and maybe not something you’d think of doing yourself – although it turns out that cysts really do love going sightseeing.

I hope that in meeting Priscilla you will recognise that we are all human, we all have faults and flaws and sometimes our bodies behave strangely. It’s perfectly find to live with imperfections as we all have them, but if they do cause you pain, discomfort or make you feel unhappy then there are safe and professional ways to have them dealt with. Dr Deniz made my cyst removal so quick, convenient and comfortable and I’m beyond thrilled with the results – I never expected to make a new friend at the same time!
