I caught up with Dusk Films, Paul Taylor

I have known Paul a few years so was great to catch up with him and learn all about his new venture for those of you who don’t know Dusk Films is a production company based in the North East of England. They started out in November 2002 producing what was the very early wave of POV style content for the web. This was at a time when owner/producer/performer Paul Taylor had nothing but his savings to shoot content, using the average day job to fund his work to slowly build up content. This sparked an array of wanna be producers who saw what he did and as his work became more and more known professionally in the industry, now a lot of people do it on a small scale and a lot of that takes up the biggest part of the adult industry today.

Lucky it was a different world back when Dusk Films started to grow from its amateur lower grade roots into the company it is today. Its reputation and high quality of work has made them leaders in the reality porn market. All of the work they turn out year after year and there is still only two people who work at Dusk Films. Paul Taylor who produces the content , performs in it and edits the content, and Scarlet Grey his Camera lady. Over the last few years they have been shooting reality based porn and leaving the POV style behind, with Paul going totally in front of the camera and Scarlet taking more of a director role on set. They both have great team work and it shows on set. They have a production company website Dusk Films, which explains all about them, and what they require from models in order to consider them for a shoot as well as a models advice page too.

I thought this was a great idea and asked Paul what made him do that

“I get asked a lot of questions, and the amount of e-mails you sent out where you have to repeat yourself, I figured I’d cover everything we do and what is involved if you work with us in one central location to cut down on time spent e-mailing people for it not to lead to an actual shoot. I also thought why stop there, why not have an advice page on there for people thinking about getting into porn and even if they don’t shoot with us, at least we know they have been informed on what we feel are some of the most important parts about the industry you need to know before coming in ” said Paul

They also get commission work to shoot it and deliver it to whoever gives them the brief. Dusk Films from the start and to this day bring in new first time girls all the time for its projects. The have nearly 10 years experience working with new girls, talking them through their first porn scene and ultimately shooting there first ever porn video. They have the patience and the nature to put people at ease and explain everything from scratch until at the end of the shoot they have a full understanding of how a porn sets works, and a lot of them go on to work for others because their first ever experience was a good one.

Paul said ” A lot of new girls are nervous and think their lack of experience will stop them getting work. We take full responsibility for how their performance comes out, take things slow and explain every little thing. The way I see it, how are they supposed to know if they have never done it, this industry has always been, a need to know from the inside. I like to give advice to new girls coming in, so they have the right advice to make an informed decision on whether they want to do a scene or not, and have talked quite a few out of doing it too over the years, with the information I have given them, on everything they have to consider first before even saying yes. We at Dusk Films know the first time is a nervous time which is why we don’t expect them to know anything. Scarlet also helps being another female on set and giving that female support an advice too, she’s worth her weight in gold is Miss Grey”

Dusk Films also work with a lot of published models too for its projects including, Kerry Louise, Anna Joy, Loz Lorrimar , Mai Bailey to name a few

They main body of work at least for the last 7-8 months has been shooting for a nerd based site that has only just launched this week. The site is called Nerd Pervert and it is based on a character that Paul plays. Because this is going to be custom shot for the new US site and more episodes have been commissioned, it means that the main content they produce at the moment is for this website. The character is a nerd character but not as we know it. Sure he looks like one, but does he act like one? A stereotypical nerd in today’s society is usually someone who loves comic books, computer games or any technology really and he is those things. However how would a nerd like that make a pornstar when usually they don’t have much luck with girls? Answer that the twist, he is a nerd but he’s far from shy, in fact he is the opposite to that. He dares to try. He convinces unsuspecting girls that he is a porn producer and has contacts world wide that will make him famous. Or they aren’t even here for a porn shoot and either talks them into it or black mails them. Or he even convinces pornstars he wants to fuck that he’s a big shot and because he pays the money to them, he gets a hell of a time out it from some of the most professional girls in the business, that wouldn’t even work with him if they knew he was just a dirty little bastard who lives to get his cock sucked and fuck girls. Its the confidence the character has that leads him into getting his own way. Scarlet even helps him get the girls in, even if sometimes she’s reluctant to do so. But he pays her and she needs the job. Because they knew this was going to take up so much of their production time and the US company who owns the site will always want content, they made it as real as they could and even used their names they were known for instead of completely re naming the characters, so they stuck with Paul and Scarlet.

“We love the reality porn that Britain has produced and because that is our nationality too, we can’t help but have that British flavour to our work. However we have always been a fan of documentaries and reality shows, so we figured we would do that and have a character driven story that just happens to be for adults and include of course hardcore porn, making it still a porn film but with a difference. We did a few scenes as a pilot and just wanted to see if anyone was interested. Lotza Dollars a big cash program in the US loved the content, that they wanted to setup a site based on that if they could get us to commit to supplying them enough content for the site. He loved that we were turning the porn stud thing up side down with a guy who didn’t look like he would get chicks to fuck him, that along with him being a different type of nerd, won them over. If you look at all the other wonderful sites Lotza Dollars own, there isn’t one site the same, they are all different and I am just glad they felt that our content would have a great place on one of their sites and I really feel that the nerd content we shoot, is just that little bit different. Being different is hard these days in porn but we achieved it I think” said Paul.

“The porn industry is a very different place these days, what with the laws changing about running sites in the UK and the fact it has been hit by a double dip recession as well as piracy too. Dusk Films is very fortunate to still be here after luckily having a fan base before the hard times. ” It’s very different now, there is so much free stuff out there that I know the industry is not what it was, the amateurs where I came from are keeping the industry going over here in the UK, without them their would be no industry in the UK I don’t think. I don’t think I’d have the patience or the dedication to start up fresh today. If we weren’t already established then I don’t think I’d bother but that’s just what I think personally” He said

So Paul what about The Future

What does Dusk Films plan for the future? more of the same? Or keep doing what they have been doing for nearly 10 years, keeping going and producing. The porn industry is different now out there, its always changing and Dusk Films knows this

” Who knows where we will be” he said ” The Industry has changed so much since we came in 2002, but I do now that we are still here and not out of pocket, because we changed with the times. Porn changed many times before we were around and some people are still here going strong. You have to adapt your business like any profession really, the website model is in danger of not being as profitable as it once was, and I have setup partnership with a US company, why? Because there is still life in the website subscription model, even if it’s not what it once was. Companies like Lotza Dollars, have always made money because they have been around for 15-20 years. They may have to work twice as hard now but they still pull in a successful group of sites that make money. These are the people who are worth working for, and not just them there are a lot of companies who still do well, but the smaller, ones of solo sites are suffering. Posting on forums and twitter isn’t enough to get success anymore, and if your a producer, you can’t know the website and marketing model yourself too, some do but very few. Its best in the hands of the guys who have success at doing it. Trouble is there are that many one man bands out there these days, that’s why a big percentage of people are failing, I know where my strengths are and it’s in performing and producing” said Paul

Dusk Films would like to get into television and are approaching different TV stations in the UK and over seas about brining some of its ideas on to a satellite channel and not just the web. One things for sure if they keep standing out like they do now, both in the quality of their work and the good reputation they have, I am sure they will be around for a lot longer yet.
