Champagne For The New Year

I will freely admit that I do struggle tipping horses from stables that seem out of form, but sometimes it is hard to look elsewhere, and the bumper that closes the Musselburgh card at 3.30pm. The John McConnell yard are without a winner in the last two weeks (their last National Hunt success was 71 days ago at the time of writing), yet the form of Champagnesocialist is such a standout I just cannot resist.

Second on his debut at Roscommon when beaten 10 lengths at the line, the winner (Chemical Energy) is now rated 132 over hurdles having won his second race at Fairyhouse in November, franking that form for all to see. Next time out he came home second again, this time at Galway when a seven-length second to Grangee (with the third another nine lengths back), and again that form has been boosted with the winner taking a bumper and a maiden hurdle since before a solid fourth in the Grade One Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas.

On form you have to be able to see why think he has every chance this afternoon, though he has been off the track for over a year which has to raise some alarm bells, and I will keep my bet to the standard stakes, tempted as I was to go for more.
