With no offence to the first two days which may yet see a Classic winners among them, the racing at Newmarket really ramps up a gear this afternoon with the card including the Group Three Craven Stakes, long established as a 2000 Guineas trial, as well as a whole host of intriguing contests.
The fact that Charlie Appleby and Godolphin are happy to let the three-year-old Beckford’s Folly take on his elders this early in the season suggests he has grown and strengthened over the winter after winning three of his four starts last season culminating in the Group Three Cornwallis Stakes over five furlongs where the son of Lope De Vega scored by a nose.
The sixth furlong here will give jockey William Buick more time to let him find his stride, and in receipt of weight from his elders he could surprise them all.
