The day before the big show is always a bit of a damp squib but I am hopeful if not 100% confident that we will see a big run from Byzantium in the maiden hurdle at Taunton due off at 2.40pm.
Yet another French import to the Paul Nicholls stable, he won his only start to date in a bumper at the gloriously named Les Sables-d’Olonne over a mile and three quarters last October before changing hands in a private sale for a new career over hurdles.
We have to take his ability to jump on trust at this stage but as he was expected to keep to bumpers this season it seems fair to assume he has been showing enough at home to be sent straight over the smaller obstacles this afternoon.
