Whacker Is No Slacker At Naas

Just the one National Hunt meeting survives this afternoon in the UK, backed up by Naas in Ireland so it’s time for a punter alert – bet even more sensibly than normal, I am scraping around the bottom of the barrel here. At Naas all eyes will be on the return to action of Ferny Hollow in the 2.55pm but he will either be a very short price – or weak in the market which would be a major concern. One to watch on this occasion and for a bet I prefer the each way chances of Whacker Clan in the 3.25pm, though you will need to hear my reasons why! The eight-year-old has been in impressive form over fences recently with wins at Tramore and Cheltenham.

They were over two and three quarter and three miles on respectively, yet he switches back to hurdles here and tries two miles or so for the very first time. My theory (feel free to laugh) is that he arrives in good form, and runs off a mark of 120 when he wud have 11lb more if he stays over the larger obstacles.

His wins have been achieved with brave front running performances, and with Mike O’Connor claiming 3lb from the saddle, I am hoping his instructions will be to try the same tactics here, and if he has the pace needed he certainly won’t be stopping close home.
