Jockeys riding at the year’s John Smith’s Grand National meeting will make their annual visit to Alder Hey’s cancer unit in Liverpool before racing tomorrow  to meet some of the patients and parents who benefit from their fantastic support.

The visit is led by Imagine Patrons, 16-time champion jockey A P McCoy and Mick Fitzgerald, who has now retired from race racing but covers the three-day festival for the BBC which gets underway this afternoon.

McCoy said: “This will be the 11th year we’ve undertaken a visit to Alder Hey before racing on Friday and each time I never fail to be moved by the bravery of these children and their families. It really puts things into perspective and the lads always make an effort to attend.”

The hospital’s Imagine Appeal charity has been named as the official charity partner at the John Smith’s Grand National meeting for the seventh year in succession.
